Rasbas wrote:If you look at the numbers in China, where you could argue they have had their peak of infections, it stands at around 80,860 cases, thats from a population of around 1.3 billion people. Their new cases have been dropping for a while now, around 10-20 new cases a day (source https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;). Those numbers just don't fit the governments predictions.

From approx 40,000 tests taken just around 1,300 are covid-19 meaning 38,700 are just normal cold/flu. Which one should you really worry about, normal flu is just as nasty for at risk groups.

Yes, of course the numbers will rise and we should do more to protect ourselves just as we should any other flu season.

When you have 24 hour rolling news about a single story people are going to think it's worse than it is.
Do you understand the steps China took to mainly stop the spread of the virus internally further than the Hubei province?

Clearly was too late to stop the spread of people travelling out of that province internationally, but it was contained by and large by quarantining an area that populated over 60 million people. Once restrictions are lifted it will start to spread again and they will probably need to repeat the previous steps albeit perhaps to a lesser degree now that they have created some capacity within their health care system.

It is not accurate to suggest that a small percentage of Chinese population contracted the virus (officially reported), therefore the same small percentage can be expected across the globe. Take Italy for example. The ratio of people infected per million of population has surpassed China's by a factor of 7.2. The next worst affected area in terms of per million of population is Switzerland which is 4.6 times that of China.

In fact, statistically speaking China are the 18th worst affected country in terms of diagnoses per head of population!

If you look at the numbers in China...
You'll realise there's something not quite right there.
It doesn't follow any logical epidemic model... unless you just stop genuinely testing people and start putting the deaths down to flu and old age and falling down the stairs.

This virus was out of control in China and then the country's economy started tanking and then suddenly people stopped getting sick and went back to work. It's a feckin miracle.

Well, you're right, there's no point in panicking. That would apply even in more imminent and life-threatening situations. I also think, to a degree, the situation has been overly hyped.
However, the real problem, as can be seen with other countries, is the impact on the health services.
In the UK, thanks to the Tory Government, our NHS is massively under-equipped to deal with this pandemic. It's barely getting by as is.
We're in a situation where, whatever option we choose, there are going to be high numbers of fatalities.
These are just my thoughts. I hope I'm wrong, and I pray that a vaccine will be ready soon...

lets see if you still feel the same in a couple of weeks.
It is not expected to peak for two months, let alone weeks. Let us all hope we end up more in a South Korea situation than an Italy one.
By taking far less action than either of those countries?

The real problem is the death of people, mums and dads, grandparents, brothers and sisters, wives, husbands, partners and friends.

Hundreds of thousands of them, probably millions.

To use words like over-hyped and blown up quite frankly disgusts me. Those are words best saved for things like Ant and Dec or Love Island. Is life really that cheap these days?

Hopefully the government step in & stop the circulation of mail & parcels & cancel all postal deliveries for at least 12 weeks.

Well I am not that concerend for my own health, except that I have a number of high risk relatives that I care for.

I would rather that we were called up for delivering essential groceries, prescriptions and possibly running errands.

I know a lot of my elderly customers are on prepayment meters, how are they going to keep warm and be able to cook ?

Of course the real problem is deaths! But with better access to life-supporting treatment these could be minimised. I said I believe the situation is overly hyped to a degree. It's mainstream media, they need to earn their money, and they sure are with all the coverage...

Just a bit of perspective, my county has only got 2 cases of cv19 and one was on a cruise.
How many people have skived off or have self isolated due to the media

Your country?
The government Chief medical officer reckoned last Thursday there were 5000-10000 cases in the UK unconfirmed and that would double in 5 days so there's probably somewhere around 20,000 cases out there.

Perspective?

Another 18 deaths today.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

Exactly. This is what I’ve been saying over the last few days.

Have any other countries reported a slowdown in cases? No. What’s that.....just China which controls everything the population can do? Amazing isn’t it! Report a case of coronavirus in China and you can bet yer bottom renminbi that it’s at best ignored or at worse you’re taken to one of their many education camps (along with your family) for criticising the state where no doubt the virus is rife.

Still, it’s ‘only’ flu right.....
The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

I think Woody knows how to read. I thought that at first, but what he's saying is never mind your county, this is what's happening with your country!
