LTB 693/16 - POST OFFICE IN CRISIS - NATIONAL INDUSTRIAL ACTION AND POSTCARD CAMPAIGN

No. 693/2016

25th November 2016

POST OFFICE: POST OFFICE IN CRISIS – NATIONAL INDUSTRIAL ACTION AND POSTCARD CAMPAIGN

Dear Colleagues

Branches will be aware of the Post Office’s continued policy of managed decline by cutting jobs and privatising Crown Offices as well as the plans to close the Defined Benefit pension scheme.

Unfortunately, the Post Office has declined to get into serious negotiations with the aim of resolving the dispute. Accordingly, we will be serving formal notice on the Post Office for a one day 24 hour strike covering all duties across the whole of our Post Office membership commencing on or after 03.00am on Saturday 3rd December and before 02.59am on Sunday 4th December.

On the day of the strike, our Representatives and members will be focusing on those Crown Offices which are on the franchise list, but which have not yet had a retail partner announced (these Crown Offices are on the attached document for your information). It is these Crowns which should be the focal point for picket lines on the day as we need to gain as much publicity as possible and galvanise support from local politicians and the community. We still have the opportunity to save these Crowns and together we can make a difference – please support the Post Office IR Representatives and members in your Branch or in a nearby Branch where possible.

Postcard Campaign

Further to LTB 683/16, Postcards in response to the government’s consultation on the Post Office Network have now been sent to all Branches. Thank you to those Branches which have already launched the postcard campaign - we have had a great response to the campaign so far, with thousands of postcards received in CWU Headquarters in the first few days.

We would urge Regional Secretaries, Branch Secretaries and all Representatives to make every effort to get as many postcards completed and returned Marcia Murray in the Communications Department by 12th December. Our Post Office IR Reps and Crown members will be outside many of the Crowns on the franchise list on the day of the strike, urging the public to sign the postcards. Your support in this regard would be appreciated.

Branches and all Representatives are urged to support our Post Office members and this day of action. Further developments will be reported.

Yours sincerely
