Barclays customers will no longer be able to withdraw cash in Post Office branches from January 2020 as the bank focuses on its investment in free-to-use ATMs instead
It's bad news for Barclays customers who like to withdraw their cash from the Post Office.
The Post Office allows customers of 28 banks to withdraw cash, pay cash in, check their balance, and deposit cheques and last year it handled over 130 million transactions on behalf of UK banks.
But from January 8, people who bank with Barclays will only be to deposit cash and cheques, and check their balances at the Post Office - they won't be able to withdraw cash.
Barclays said it has decided to remove cash withdrawal services from Post Office branches in order to focus on its investment in free-to-use ATMs instead.
The banking giant has also launched a cashback scheme for customers to withdraw cash from businesses in remote towns and areas without a branch or ATM, from 2020.
Adam Rowse, MD Branch Based Banking at Barclays said: “We are constantly exploring new ways to evolve the role of the branch.
"We also recognise that there are opportunities to support customers with access to cash where there is no branch or ATM nearby.
"We are launching a cash back offering working with merchants to give customers access to cash over the counter.
"By behaving differently, we hope to see a real difference in how customers interact with us.”
Which banks let their customers use Post Office branches?
Allied Irish Banks
Bank of Ireland
Bank of Scotland
Barclays (account holders won't be able to withdraw cash from January 8, 2020)
The Co-operative Bank
First Trust Bank
Nationwide Building Society
Payment Cloud Technologies
Royal Bank of Scotland
All the banks above have reconfirmed their commitment through the new Banking Framework agreement that their customers can access a range of cash and cheque banking services at Post Office branches.
However, the Post Office said it was disappointed that Barclays has chosen to stop allowing their customers to make cash withdrawals from January 8 2020.
