Post Office 'urgently seeking operator'; nine rural communities also left without services as branch's mobile and outreach service also folds

Marske residents have branded the sudden closure of the town's only Post Office "absolutely shocking".

The branch, on Marske High Street, also operated a mobile and outreach postal service covering nine rural communities - meaning they have also lost their postal services following the closure on Tuesday.

The Post Office has confirmed it is "urgently seeking a temporary operator" to get the branch reopened and has apologised to customers, claiming the closure was "beyond its control".

Meanwhile Redcar Labour MP Anna Turley has appealed to the Post Office to reinstate services to the town "as soon as possible".

Ms Turley said: "This is really disappointing news and has come without any warning or notice.

"It is a key public service within the village which many rely on and the nearest branches are a car or bus journey away.

"I have been in contact with the Post Office this morning and have stressed the importance of getting this branch reopened."

A spokesperson for The Post Office said: “We understand and appreciate how much communities rely on our services.

"We would like to apologise to our customers in Marske By The Sea for the sudden, temporary, closure of the branch due to circumstances beyond our control.

“We are working hard to restore services for the community as quickly as possible and apologise for the inconvenience caused by this break in service.”

Residents have posted on Facebook about the closure.

One said: "Please for the sake of our community get our Post Office reopened."

While another poster suggested: "Put it at the back of the Co-Op, it's a good move socially, financially and has the benefit of parking."

Alternative Post Offices in the area include New Marske, at 10 Gurney Street, TS11 8EG and inside the Spar shop on Windsor Road, Saltburn TS12 1BD.
