They have avoided an immediate jail sentence

Two former employees who stole more than £9,000 from a South Derbyshire post office in a "pre-planned" swindle have avoided an immediate jail sentence.

Craig Allen and Joseph Shenstone stole a total of £9,477 from Swadlincote Post Office, on The Delph, in the town centre, over a period of three months, a court heard.

Allen, 47, of Bridgewater Road, Burton, and Shenstone, 20, of Highfields Close, Ashby, appeared at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates' Court to admit theft by employee.

The offence happened between September 1 and December, 2016.

The court heard that it involved a high cash value, and was a pre-planned offence. It also heard the crime was "a significant breach of trust" and they acted together.

Both men have been made the subject of a 26-week jail sentence suspended for 12 months. They must also carry out 150 hours unpaid work.

They were both ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £115 victim surcharge.

Allen must also pay a total of £6,418 compensation. However, Shenstone has already repaid his debt.

A Post Office spokesman, said: “We do not comment on individual cases.

"We do not employ the people who work at Swadlincote Post Office as staff are directly employed by the postmaster for Swadlincote.”

Burton Live is awaiting a comment from Swadlincote Post Office.
