Another victim has a knife pointed at his throat

A man who beat a bystander unconscious during a robbery has been jailed for 13 years.

Daniel Carpenter, 36, stole around £1,000 cash in a raid at Crumlin Post Office on September 9 last year.

During the incident, Carpenter, from Crumlin, beat a 55-year-old man unconscious with a metal bar.

Two months later on November 14, he and an unidentified accomplice carried out another robbery at Albion Road Service Station in Pontypool. They were armed with a metal bar and a knife and made off with cash and cigarettes.

Carpenter was also charged with arson related to a car fire on Manmoel Road in Blackwood also in November 2017.

He pleaded guilty to two charges of robbery, one of arson and one of perverting the course of justice at Newport Crown Court on April 13.

PC Martyn Newman said: “This investigation was very much a team effort and the hard work and persistence of all those involved has paid off with the outcome.

“Carpenter took no responsibility for his actions and showed no remorse throughout the investigation. He lied and claimed innocence right up until the morning his trial was due to commence. It was only at the last minute he pleaded guilty.

“The sentence given reflects the seriousness of Carpenter’s crimes.

“We are continuing to undertake enquiries to identify a second offender involved in the Albion Road filling station robbery. If you think you can assist please call 101 quoting log 514 14/11/17.”
