A CITY councillor is calling for a new Post Office in a neighbourhood that has been without a branch for over six months.

Cllr Richard Udall said some residents in Dines Green are currently forced to walk over a mile into St John’s to access Post Office services.

The Post Office said it was working hard to restore services in Dines Green, following the closure of its branch in Gresham Road, Worcester.

Lynne Burgess, a senior support worker at Dines Green’s Constable House, a care home for adults with complex needs, said residents at the centre now have to be taken to the Post Office.

She said: "They could probably go by themselves to Dines Green.

"They use the Post Office for stamps, posting things and postal orders.

"I live in St John's and used [the Dines Green branch] as the parking in St John's is terrible. I would go there on the way to work."

Cllr Udall added: “It is simply not good enough.

“Residents of Dines Green have been without their Post Office for over six months. Mystery surrounds the reasons why it has been closed.

“I just want the service, in some form, to return to Dines Green, even if it is for reduced hours.

“The Post Office is for many people an essential public service, a large area of Worcester like Dines Green needs one.

“Some residents use it daily and have struggled to get all the way into St John’s in order to use the nearest alternative."

He called on the Post Office to offer some form of replacement service in the area.

The councillor added: "Simply shutting up shop with no alternative and no explanation is not on.”

The Post Office said it was working hard to restore services for the community.

A spokesman added: “We sincerely apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closure of Dines Green Post Office. We understand and appreciate how much communities rely on our services."

The Dines Green Post Office, in Gresham Road, Worcester, closed on Wednesday, September 27, because of “operational reasons”.
