At the grand age of 79 most have been enjoying their golden years for quite some time, with working life a distant memory and leisure a top priority.
But grandmother Jenny Clarke, who has worked as a postmistress for 43 years, is only just putting away the stamp book.
Jenny who has been running Stoke Post Office for the last 17 years single-handedly after her husband and business partner Peter passed away, says its finally her time to have some freedom.
Stoke village are determined to have the "vital source" remain on Jenny's departure and say that they have investors interested in parting with the funds to ensure it happens.
Jenny says despite a feeling of sadness that it is the end of an era full of fond memories she looks forward to embarking on a new chapter.
She told The Herald of her most memorable moments - being known as the village medic - and some of the saddest times - when an elderly lady died recently in the store.
Jenny, who was a nurse before she took on the post office, said: "At the moment I feel excited, motivated to move on and happy that I've made the right decision.
"The main reason for my departure is on my next birthday I'll be the big fat 8-0 and I have macular degeneration.
"I've had a problem for quite some time and I've been very lucky so far but I feel I've got to be sensible and need to make these important decisions while I can."
Macular degeneration is an age-related medical condition which may result in blurred or no vision.
"I'm blessed to have found a beautiful apartment at The Rise in Plympton," she said. "The grounds are beautiful and if my eyesight deteriorates, I'll be in the best place.
"I shall miss the public most and the general buzz of the village. Everyone's already saying 'what will we do without you Jenny - you are Stoke'.
"But I don't plan to slow down and become stagnant - I'll be secretary of the resident and tenant association, I've volunteered my services to the shop there and have joined the gardening club.
"I'm excited to get up in the morning and have the freedom to do whatever I want to."
