A SPECIAL memorial has been unveiled to popular Haslemere postmistress Angela Macdivitt, who died last November.
Ex-town mayor Brian Howard, who is leading the campaign to save the West Street branch with a community buyout, joined Angela’s husband Roger, friends and family for the ceremony.

Roger said: “Angela was very well-known and frequently referred to as ‘The Post Office Lady’ when seen by customers on her travels in many parts of Britain. This name is reflected in the memorial plaque.

“The National Trust is extending an ancient orchard near The Swan Barn Walk and it agreed the family could sponsor a tree. We have adopted an ancient variety of cider apple called Foxwhelp and the plaque is placed next to it.

“We, as a family, had been very proud of Angela’s service and she would have been very sad to have seen the very real prospect of closure of the post office where she worked.

Roger added: “The family are behind Brian in his attempts to save the branch and hope people respond, as we consider the post office to be an important part of the community. We, as a family, are not normally the type to have gravestones or memorials. But as Angela loved her walks there and always loved to grow things, a tree seemed a great way to remember her.”
