500 Euros taken from Dunbar post office

Police have urged businesses to be vigilant for an ongoing fraud known as “ringing the changes”.

Officers in the Dunbar area received a report of the scam at the local post office in the High Street on Thursday November 5.

Two males asked for money to be changed into a different currency.

The couple then intentionally used distraction tactics to defraud the shop of more than 500 Euros.

Other businesses in the region are now being asked to remain alert and report any similar instances to come forward.

The pair are described as being between 30 and 40 and of Eastern European appearance. One was around 5ft 7ins tall with a stocky build and black hair. He was wearing a black t-shirt and black jacket.

The other was of a similar build and was also wearing black or dark clothing, but had facial hair.

Constable Kerri Broatch said: “We would advise that businesses ask for ID when asked to change large amounts of money and to cease the transaction if at anytime the customer attempts to confuse or distract you.

“Other companies should be wary of this scam and if they believe someone is trying to use this method to defraud them then contact police immediately.

“In addition we are keen to hear from anyone who can help us trace these individuals and ask that anyone with information that can assist with our enquiries should also get in touch.”
