I start next week (quick question)

Post by Ddarko85 »

Induction day Monday - start on Tuesday.

I’m on a 25 hour a week contract. I’m guessing this is from Monday to Saturday (didn’t state this on job advertisement).

My question is, will there be pressure to do overtime? I don’t mind doing Tuesday and Thursday OT but I have commitments the other days. Any advice or suggestions would help.

It’s a mish mash of positives and negatives on here haha

I'm a 25hr 'spare' from 9:30 to 14:30 and there is pressure to do overtime most days, apart from Tuesday.

Section 9.2 of my contract says something like;

Overtime working is necessary because we provide a public service. It is a condition of your employment that you are liable to work overtime and attend at varying times of the day.

If we take out too much work, this means a manager can instruct us to stay out passed our normal finish time and complete the delivery. This is called 'flexing'

We must carry out this instruction, and complete the delivery, then if we feel aggrieved, we can submit a formal grievance the following day.

As far as Im aware, the managers can only reasonably instruct you to 'flex' once per week, and only ask if it is NOT a significant amount of work, i.e. +1hr. However I can't find this written down anywhere

It is expedient to only take out what you can expect to finish within your time. Actually knowing how long it will take you may require a crystal ball.. however you may have to argue through your teeth before the manager gives in

Hi mate,

So with your 25 hour contract - how many hours would you say you do? I have flexibility so I’m sure I can work something out. Do you have trouble claiming overtime? I’ve heard mixed things on here about that.

Tuesday will more than likely be your day off, good luck with your new job, some love it, some hate it, keep us informed.

I’m working 5 weeks on with 1 week off according to the advertisement. So it’ll be Monday to Saturday. Which I don’t mind, just horror stories of new starters coming back at 5pm

I really wouldn't pay much attention to the adverts, as it will more than likely change as soon as you start but it depends on your office as they all seem to work in a different way. I started in September. I was on a 25 hour contract but immediately made up to 27.5 hours. I love the job. I have never had to argue about overtime pay (but again, depends on your office) and I have a rotating day off per week.

I would never be finishing at 5pm lol you must must must stand up to the doms as they will pressure you to do overtime that you don't want to do. I personally don't mind working over an hour or so on some days as the extra cash is great but I've always said no to working my days off. To be honest.. the worst part so far was the induction lol most pointless thing I've ever attended.
