Working out hours worked/PAYSLIP and claiming overtime

Post by FirstPost »

Today was my Induction and Tomorrow is my first day, received my first payslip today as a new starter (I've only had my Induction so far) and wondered if someone can explain to me whats what? - Basic Pay, Delivery Supplement, Tax Paid and Employee NIC. At the bottom left hand side it says 'YEAR TO DATE' and 'Assessable Pay'?

Should I write down my worked hours and check that it matches my payslip? My previous job was a bit sneaky regarding this issue so I want to keep an eye on it at all times and make sure I am getting paid for everything that I have worked

Am I on a temporary tax code at the minute?

How do I claim overtime? What does overtime show up as on the paylslip?

Basic pay is pay for your contracted hours.
Delivery Supplement - A supplement you get for working as a delivery Postie.
Tax and Employee NIC (National Insurance Contribution) - self-evident.

Year to date is how much tax you have paid this year and assessable pay is the amount you have been paid that has been taxed.

Write down overtime - Yes as some is paid in the same week and some is paid in the following week, it all depends on the Manager/Clerks put it into the system before the cut off time. So if you don't keep a note you could lose track.

Working out hours worked/PAYSLIP and claiming overtime

It appears every office has a different system to claim overtime. You will have to ask your workplace coach when you start at your DO next week. Some offices ask that posties working past their official finish time fill out an overtime "docket" which is then used by the locker staff/DOM support to fill out the necessary online forms after it has been authorized by your line manger /DOM. Other offices do this for you by asking that you go see your line manager who will enter your extra hours for you.

Your workplace coach will have all the answers for you, just ask

Always keep a record of how many hours overtime you do and make sure it shows on your wage slip the following week.
