Do these hours sound plausible?

Post by twiglet98 »

I've been hoping for a long time to see my local delivery office advertising part-time vacancies. Now they are, and it says "You will work from 09.00 to 14.36...", which sounds a bit bizarre! The next nearest delivery office advertises more frequently, 09.30 to 14.30, although one of the recruitment agencies had it as 09.30 to 02.30, but it is across town and involves horrendous traffic, which would add 30-45 minutes travelling time. The closer one is an easy drive and five minutes walk from the station if I didn't have the car.

5hr 36m a day for 5 days would be 28 hours a week, is that the contract that is being advertised?

It is possible that that is how the day would be broken down, it depends on the requirements of the office. The 30 hour contract part timers where I work do 6 hours every day and their start time is decided by the finish time of the full time staff - full timers finish at different times every day, so part timers start 6 hours before the full timers' finish time.

The office may need you for those hours, or it may just be that someone has divided 28 hours by 5 days and put the times down from that!

Thank you, yes the maths does seem to work out like that. I'll get started on the application tomorrow - wish me luck! I really want a job where my start time doesn't really fluctuate, so it will depend if the quoted times are actually rather flexible from RM's point of view and it's just a guideline.

Royal Mail starting times are usually fairly static, its the finishing time that tends to move around.
