I was told 6 months but it's actually a year, I found that out when I had been in the job a year and told my probation period was over! It's meaningless though as I've never heard of anyone not getting through it.

Think it can be extended in the case of absences, i.e stage. I know to new starters through lateness and absence not to have a contract.
