My first week as a postie!

Post by Decpassat06 »

Would just like to day thank you to everyone who has answered my questions along the way, it really has helped me along. I'm really loving working for Royal Mail, however I'm always behind my coach and my god he reminds me..... I feel like I'm to slow but don't see how I can possibly go any faster? But hopefully I'll get there, thanks again everyone!

Doesn't sound like a good coach to me if he's making you feel like you're slow during your first week in the job. I'm often quite ashamed at the actions of my colleagues and I hope you manage to persevere and enjoy the job without being made to feel inadequate.

In my opinion, the job at its core is very enjoyable, without the awful managers and colleagues!

Good luck, keep us informed how you are getting on.

I'm amazed you got a coach. I was supposed to have one and be shepherding him for 2weeks but after 3days I was left by myself lol. its all good though. its a learning curve.

Thanks for the replies guys, i was coached for 3 days also, but it just so happens my "coach" is actually the guy I'm partnered up with, I'm going around on my own and he's really started to ride my ass.... If it even gets close to finishing time he has a hissy fit and want to be back to the depot. Thing I'm worried about is we are returning Mail and I'm getting the blame, but I'm not getting lost and I'm going at good pace so can't understand how I'm being so slow. I teamed up with another guy on some overtime the other day, finished at the same time no problems at all. Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong lol

I'm in the same situation as you on my second week, my coach is also the guy I'm partnered up with. I feel I'm going slow too but my coach says speed will come with time, instead of him waiting for me to catch up he'll come split my load and help me out.

This just shows the nature of 2 different employees.

On the one hand you have the 'coach' who seems to me to be a bit mean expecting you to be at full speed so early in the job. He probably wants to get done as soon as poss because he is being paid up until whatever time and can most likely just go home when the job is done. (If it isn't completed, he is obliged to work right up until his finish time - maybe an unusual experience for him?)

On the other hand you have the overtime colleague you were out with - he was most likely being paid by the minute so was quite happy to do the job at a sensible pace and be paid for it accordingly.

I have worked with colleagues before who were speed-demons during the work day but turned into dawdlers as soon as they were clearing a walk on overtime. Childish behaviour both of them, in my opinion, but unfortunately the culture in RM encourages this.

Well today I finished my loops on time with him and 2 before him.... he didn't take the last 2 loops of the duty out with us, he praised me for being faster however when we got back to the depot he told my manager I was abit better and he helped me?! he really is making me look bad to my manager for some reason and I think it's all to do with taking the last 2 loops, he's leaving his last 2 loops also, I thinks it's because if he takes them we will have a late finish, I'm out with a different postman tomorrow so we will see what he says about my speed/ performance etc etc
