Start in 3 weeks - What to wear for first day?

Post by mattandbenny »

So make the transfer from an Essex accountant to a Yorkshire postman in 3 weeks and was wondering what to turn up in on day 1? It's in yorkshire in November which i assume will be freezing - i was thinking some sort of trousers / tracksuit bottoms will be OK rather than shorts?

Please correct me if i am wrong, but i was thinking something like:
- Comfy Trainers (any colour?)
- Black (or dark) tracksuit bottoms
- T shirt
- Jumper and/or jacket if it's cold
- Hat & gloves if it's cold

I've read that uniform takes 6 weeks to arrive - what will i be provided with on day 1? (i.e. do i need to bring my own coat?).

Also can anyone reccomend any good gloves etc that would be good for handling letters?

Any help appreciated!

I've been told t wear trousers, combats ideal as you will need plent of pockets. Dont think you can wear white trainers and you should be given a high vis jacket to show you are from Royal Mail.

Good luck with it

Wear something that will take a beating, jeans retain no heat when they're wet so if you're going to wear some maybe invest in some waterproof trousers? If you have something a little more rugged than trainers, I'd go with them. Ideally something that supports your ankle and gives your feet some protection from the many knocks and scrapes they will endure.
If a sweatshirt is warm enough for the Yorkshire weather take a kagoul in case of rain. Yes you can work up a sweat whilst on the job but working when your cold and wet is a long miserable experience I can tell you. A bottle of water and snacks to keep you going wil also come in handy.

Advice?
Never be afraid to ask if youre not sure about anything.
Write yourself a checklist. PDA? Check Red cards? Check Pens? Keys? Specials? Lapsing?
Join the union and get to know your rep, they're there to help if something doesn't seem right.
You're not expected to be up to speed immediately that comes in time so don't sweat it.
Get the prep right in the office it's a damn sight easier than trying to correct something after you have left the office.
