Application - Delivery driver

Post by Balesleftfoot »

Hello,

I'm looking to apply for a delivery driver post at a local office.

I'm currently working at a full time post in the emergency services. I'm writing to ask for some advice in relation to the application. The contracts being offered a 6 month fixed term, do these posts generally only last 6 months, or are employees kept on if performance is acceptable? I'm conscious of leaving what is a secure full time role in favour of a role which may only last 6 months.

Many thanks

Generally, they are extended but its not 100% certain especially if there is a reorganisation due in the office.

Also, not to put you off, but it's unlikely you'll be doing a lot of driving if its in a Delivery Office. First, you'll have to a driving assessment (called a changeover in RM) and they won't do that immediately. Also even on a typical singleton rural delivery you still do a majority of walking. In a CDV role (2 in a van) then that is most definitely still walking most of the time, even for the driver.

Also even though fixed term contracts are generally extended, it can take up to 2 years to be made permanent. Another thing to be careful of is that the contracted hours may be quite low, though overtime is always available during busy times, and they can change them as one contract runs out and you change to another.

However, it is a good job, the best I have had.
