Travelling distance

Post by KEVINM1960 »

Hi everyone.. a vacancy has come up in a depot that is approx 12 miles away from where I live. I am on the waiting list but can someone tell me if there is a maximum travelling distance to a depot, that won't go against me if I re-apply. I believe you can only apply for one position at a time?, so I am unsure weather to go for this or hold out for one nearer home, with a better chance of success. Cheers

I was in a similar situation - was on the waiting list and another office, (not the one I applied to) came up - it's about 10 miles from me. I applied for it, though it wasn't really where I wanted to work. I'm glad I did because no other jobs have come up in the 3 months at the other three offices that I could get to more easily. Not sure what happens if you get to the 3 months and haven't applied for anything.
Don't know if distance from depot goes against you, I read somewhere on this forum that it could - but maybe that's part of the scoring system when they interview you - you're already past that.

Kev,

don't know about travelling distance counting against you, I live 25 miles away from the DO I got a job at.

The DOM who interviewed me was perfectly aware of where I lived as it was on my CV and I mentioned
to him that I would eventually want to move to a DO closer to home.

So longer term I am looking for a role more local to where I live, there are three sub-DO's
off the main DO where I currently am (all within a radius of 13 miles from home) where I would prefer to work due to them being closer,
however I could have been waiting till the cows came home to see a job advertised publicly for them.

My thought was once I've got a foot in the door, it would be easier eventually to hear about more local vacancies
through the grapevine and apply for them with a proven track record.
