Postperson interview today

Post by 99zardoz »

Any views welcome. It looks like I might be offered the role. It might be interesting for people with an interview lined up.

Had an interview today. The e-mail from the recruiter just said "go to the delivery office at time x". Got there early and public enquiry desk was closed. Pressed door button and it didn't open. Went to staff entrance no intercom. Waited there. Eventually got in 10 minutes late. The recruiter was as much help as a glass buttock when i called.

Apologised profusely to the interviewer who was fine about it and checked my d/l passport etc.

He explained the ts and cs and asked if I could be flexible, travel.to different offices etc. I said usually yes if I didn't have prior commitments.

He then asked me to tell him about myself. He seemed mystified why I would leave a highly paid professional job for this, but I said I didn't enjoy it and wanted to do something different and that I enjoyed walking (all true)

He asked about my fitness (I run and lift weights, and hike as a hobby)

He asked me about driving safely and I talked about not speeding and driving at an appropriate speed for the conditions. I also talked about concentration and anticipating hazards.

He asked me if I had any holiday arranged, which I told him. He said they would honour it.

I asked about training and whether I would be trained how to sort a frame (he seemed impressed I'd researched that).

I asked about if uniform was needed and how I'd get it.

He showed me the sorting area downstairs and explained a bit about how the incoming mail is sorted into walks etc.

Finally he asked me to read a numberplate in the car park

One of the easiest interviews I have had and I got the impression they would offer the job to me (lets see)

My impression was the recruiter communication is highly disorganised . It should say "go exactly here, wait and ask for person y". The ts and cs for the job are poor (its basically full time, whats the motive with the part time contract?). A lot of this is possibly me getting a bite of a reality sandwich coming from a higher paying role. The emphasis on flexibility could be problematic around my family commitments. However the job itself I think would suit me.

They mentioned flexibility to work more hours and to go to other offices. My attitude is if I can, I will but I won't always be able to.

I am 60% minded to give it a go. I want out of my previous profession which may be well paid but I hated it. I am 50 and no mortgage so I am not bound to "executive" job titles any more.

The terms and conditions are not good but then again many similar roles will have the same issue vs my old role. I spoke to my local postie beforehand and she seemed positive when I said I was thinking of applying.

I have no other ideas as to what to do and although I have savings I cant sit on my arse forever.

I like walking and am reasonably fit for a 50 year old. I like the idea of turning up, doing the work and leaving without worrying about work issues in my own time.

It might not work out but I don't think I'll know until I try.

Go for it, but give yourself a couple of weeks settling in time.

Go for it, I was 52 when I started, having spent many years previously in a professional office, so it was a culture shock but you get used to it. It certainly keeps you fit and can be enjoyable. No two days are the same, with varying work loads and changeable weather but in general I enjoy it.

honestly, i think he may have firstly thought you were only in it for the short term, but probably more that you had researched the actual job and he maybe thought you may cause issues with being "very" flexible
honestly my dad could pass an interview at our office and he's been dead over 10 years
i wouldn't be too fed up about it, as posted above, you have dodged a bullet

I think you are right. I think they want people who are desparate and will just do anything they are asked overtime wise. I said I would try and be flexible when I could but the right answer was perhaps to bend over.... Onwards and upwards.
