Getting a job without using Angard

Hi
Just wondered if it was possible to get a job with the Royal Mail as an indoor sorter without using Angard? Do RM advertise their jobs anywhere else, as on the website it just says all recruitment is done through Angard. Is it very difficult to get a permanent job with the RM?

Unlikely.

Whilst there are full-time staff who work exclusively indoors, from my very limited experience they've either been there donkeys years or been sent there because, for whatever reason, they're no longer deemed up to the rigors of being out on delivery but are too expensive to get rid-of or have friends in the right places.

Nowadays all recruitment is done online.

Oh I see so I could check the royal mail website every so often but its highly unlikely an indoor sorting job will be advertised? The only other option is working for angard as a casual indoor sorter and hope this will get you in permanently?

Nah you still have no chance. only way to get with RM is through delivery, I was with Angard for 2 years and was told I was one of the only names that would be taken on if anything came up, towards the end there was loads of vacancies but agency workers were not allowed to apply so when a delivery vacancy came up I applied for that...now I go back to the MC for overtime during the week.

So by delivery you mean being a postman? Do you have any hope of getting in delivery if you dont drive, as I do see my postman using that red trolley? So you wasnt working for Angard you were working as a temp directly for Royal Mail and then got a permanent job like that? Whats MC?

Do not many people want to do delivery is that why there are more places than indoor mail sorters?!

I was with angard for 2 years after joining RM as an xmas casual, They're always advertising delivery contracts but i've never seen a mail center advert online...most vacancies seem to require driving these days...when I applied I was asked around 6 times on the application if I have a license then went for my interview and was asked by the manager if I had a license...lol

Might be worth lying on the application? I know there is a part timer at my office who doesn't drive although I think he was casual when they allowed Angard employees to deliver who got taken on.

Personally I don't mind delivery (now that I know what i'm doing) but the way you're trained (you don't get hardly any training) I can understand why a lot of people quit after a couple of weeks hence all the vacancies...if it wasn't for google maps i'd have probably chucked it in as well lol, didn't help that no other postie really wanted to help out until they realized I wasn't agency and that I was coming in every day...

Do you find you have needed to drive in your job as a postmen? Or is it more of an added bonus? Oh so you really have to be good at directions to do the job? Do you think most quit coz they find it to difficult finding there way around the streets then? Or because the job is so phyiscally demanding? Yeah I bet google maps on your phone was a life saver!
Are they really strict with uniform? I mean can you wear your own trousers and shoes as long as they are the right colours?
Sorry for all the questions I used to work at Canary Wharf doing office work and have been made redundant, so Ive been trying other jobs out latey, its really tough out there!!

From what I gather, driving is integral to how RM delivery mail nowadays. Obviously there'll be posties in situ that can't drive, but there's no chance they'd take on a new hire who doesn't have a license.
