Should I be phoning them for shifts?

Post by psmyth07 »

Or should I wait until they get in touch with me? I've only had 1 shift and that was 2 weeks ago.

I'd just phone them, but don't expect many shifts in August. Indeed the way Reed are stuffing new casual on to their books Im not even sure were going to get much ever again. All they carer about is supplying the RM with casual staff, and if they can get away with paying them minimum wage instead of the AWR rate, then they get to keep more of the fee that they charge the RM per hour for supplying them. (this is a widely believed theory by the way, but we cant find out how much they get per hour for each casual, apparently its over £20 though) Why the RM cant see this I have no earthly idea? WE had two new ones start last night, much to the shift mangers disbelief. He didnt want or need new casuals, what he wants is his old regular staff in every night. But thats never going to happen. All that does happen is that the amount of miss sorts goes up dramatically, Yorks get pushed out without being scanned, and regular staff eventually have had enough and leave. (which is im sure what Reed want)

We are at least 300% overs staffed at our place from what we can work out. No wonder they try to give you one or two (if your lucky) shifts a week. Can you blame managers for bypassing Reed (Angard) and asking regulars to come in, risking getting them in trouble with Reed as they are supposed to go through them and not accept shifts from RM. We dont want new casuals competing for our hours, and it is now causing antagonism between long term casuals and new ones. But they don't explain all this when they "interview" you do they ? Anyway like i said I'd give them a ring, you might get lucky if you ring at the right time.

Having had some experience with casual staff £20 per hour sounds about right however Angard is owned by Royal Mail Group so I assume Reeds simply run things and take a charge for doing so. The overstaffing is almost certainly down to Royal Mail and not Reed and it is simply a way to as they see things to keep costs down. In reality it does not save them anything as you say misorts increase and other mistakes happen which costs Royal Mail their reputation and ultimately business and lost revenue. Each Mail Centre or office knows the maximum number of casuals they are likely to need the solution is simple hire the maximum plus a few extra that way we get more work Royal Mail gets more reliable staff which should equal fewer mistakes (We All Make Them ) Everyone should be a winner.

When I was with Angard I would phone every day at the same time, if there were no shifts i'd keep calling every half hour or so...worked for me...also, keep in touch with people who work the same shifts as you so you can let each other know when you have got a shift, helps to uncover when they lie to you...which they always do...

Don't wait for them to ring you! It hardly ever happens. Having said that even when you call them you hardly ever get thru and on the rare occasion you do get thru they'll say "nothing's come thru yet" BUT KEEP TRYING! Good luck
