well i have to say, as a christmas casual worker for the royal mail and having worked so hard last month that i am still trying to recover i have to say that i am pretty upset. i watched a thing on the news yesterday where they were listing the companies and how many christmas casual workers they had kept on. And it comes to royal mail... out of 23000 xmas casuals they decided to be generous and keep on none of them. now i suppose these are bad times so i can just about get my head around it... but what really upsets me is that, some of the kids i worked with we're talkin mainly 18, 19 year olds who never had a job before are on £15 an hour having signed with angard, and i know that for a fact having spoke to them, its simply not fair.

Angard casuals start at £6.19 ph

If you worked with people earning £15 (which sounds a lot in my experience) they must have qualified (12 weeks without more than six week breaks) via AWR -Agency Workers Rights -which Angard are obliged to pay by law, not through their generosity...

RM no longer recruit year round casuals, they have hived that off to Angard (almost entirely owned by RM)

Angard casual are not guaranteed any work, last week I got 5 hours, and are often given very short notice, an hour and ten minutes yerterday.

RM don't offer many permanent positions, even part time ones, these days, and are likely to offer the Mail Centre positions to people who have been casuals there for quite a while.

Do not be surprised Royal Mail have not kept any casuals on themselves - any they employed, that they "kept on", will have been transferred to Angard (a company owned by Royal Mail Group).

If they are 18 or 19 they will more than likely be on minimum wage for 18 to 19 year olds with Angard - minimum wage is £4.98. Please do not believe they will be getting paid £15+ -Angard do not pay anything above what they need to.

This is what happened with people of that age last Christmas (2011) when they were kept on by Angard - a reason, I believe, not many people below 21 stayed on with Angard. I do not think at the MC I work at we had any young casual stay on beyond a couple of weeks after Christmas because their pay was reduced from the Christmas rate to the minimum wage (£4.98).

Once they qualify for AWR the pay rates completely change but none of them will be on higher pay rates until they have qualified.

You know its a fact because you have been told by someone - pretty loose definition of a fact if you don't mind me pointing that out. Its a bit like Cameron saying a Coffee Chain paid a fair amount of tax in the UK.

I think to be honest you have been adding 2 + 2 and getting a result of 15. Angard are probably being paid £15 an hour for each casual by Royal Mail, this would be a standard contract between companies, they would then pay as close to the minimum wage as possible to the actual people filling those roles.

Have to say sometimes there are posts on RMC that appear to do nothing other than try to create rumours and confusion, to what end I don't know but I think this is one of them.

oh is it really .. having spoke to the guy in question and the other people signed by angard who had not yet reached 12 weeks , yes it is FACT thankyou. having been also told by the managers at chelmsford MC , and the people in HR that there would be some asked to carry on, i dont appreciate being basically told that on here that i am a
liar. all i was trying to say is that i thought it was unfair that some of them are on that much, whilst i worked 10 times as hard believing there was a chance for permanent work

Hitmeup = check what I posted I did not call you a liar - I posited that you had been misinformed - there is a difference in intent.

I stand by my comment though that your post has added to the confusion, perhaps that was the intent on the person who told you I don't know but if Angard Casuals are paid £15 an hour then not only are they paid nearly 1/3 more than Royal Mail Permanent staff, but they must also be one of the best paid group of non professional casual employees in the country.

It would be hilarious if the introduction of the Agency Workers Regulations meant that after 12 weeks an Angard Casual's pay actually went down to the level of a permanent employee.
If causals were making that much i would be on the phone to Angard yesterday.
£15/hr isn't far off line manager's pay.
