As anyone who works at a MDEC knows, we get daily feedback based on our performance on the previous day. Their way of assessing performance, based on 10 random images that we’ve processed, is rather arbitrary imo, when you consider the hundreds of images that we process each day and you can easily get lucky or unlucky depending on the ones that are chosen. For example, I was on ‘100%’ accuracy for the whole of last week but I know I made a few mistakes every day. However, yesterday, my accuracy dropped to ‘70%’, which is the lowest I have got since we started live keying. As is usually the case whenever you don’t get 100%, I was told what I did wrong on the 3 incorrectly processed images and I appreciate the feedback as it is there to help us improve; I only learnt today that it isn’t necessary to F1 ROI-disabled images since you can rotate them yourself.
But after receiving the feedback, one of the other coaches later came to sit with me and watch me keying for a short while to see what I was doing wrong as “70% is quite low”. It made me a little nervous though I didn’t make any mistakes (might have helped that I went a little slower than normal :P) and they said that they didn’t understand how I got 3 wrong….. maybe because I’m human? Do they think they have infallible robots working for them? If I had been getting this % consistently/ for consecutive days or even just for the whole of yesterday (and not just the 10 images that yielded that percentage), then I would understand why it would be a cause for concern but this is the first time that my accuracy has dropped this low. It just didn’t seem appropriate and I was a little disappointed with it because, apart from yesterday and the first day of live keying, I have been getting at least 90% on their measures of accuracy, making day-to-day improvements on my tasks per hour as well, and – I don’t mean to blow my own trumpet here :P – yesterday, they told me that I was in the top 50 keyers (who will get taken on for temporary work in January). Also, I’ve been doing my best to cut down on the number of mistakes I’m making whilst maintaining my keying speed.
Not sure what the point of this post is, I’m not annoyed as my post may suggest but I just thought I would have a moan well…… because I can (even though ‘tis the season to be jolly).
