Job Center and Emergency Tax

Hi Guys,

Just wondered how things will work out, I am currently on JSA and so I assume when I sign off the job center would send me my P45 in the post but it wont be in time for me to start my induction and work and so just wondered if I would be stuck on emergency tax straight away, and if so how long would it be until I could claim it back

You get a p46 when you get your welcome pack , just fill that in and send it

Just wondered if any one here was currently on emergency tax and wondered how much they actually take off as tax, I know it will be different for most people think ill be on a roughly £248 a week base pay and just fancied a quick idea of how much id be walking away with

If you are on emergency tax they assume no personal allowance until your P45 is supplied and you will normally pay the tax rate appropriate to you (in this case probably 20%, unless you get into the higher tax bracket - highly unlikely). Once they have your P45 and processed it they should repay some, possibly all, the tax you paid on emergency tax back to you pretty quickly.

Ditto what Verging just said, to be exact i think emergency tax is 19.7%.
I'd expect it would take somewhere in the region of 2-4 weeks to get the money back.

If they dont get your P45 processed in time for a pay run before you leave you may have to wait until April.

Depends on how slow the job center are in sending it to me, knowing them i doubt ill even get the thing until April rofl

You will, more than likely, pay National Insurance for the period you are working.
