Delivery Office and Mail Sorting?

Hello,

I have a quick question about Mail Sorting and Delivery Office? I was under the impression that Mail Sorting would be sorting the mail/packages into Pigeon Holes, as I did that last year, but I have a friend who has taken up a position at a Delivery Office much closer to home. Initially I thought his job would be to deliver mail as a Postman as that is what the job description states, but the hours he has chosen are 14:00 - 22:00 so what will he actually be doing? If he will be doing the Mail Sorting I may reapply as this one is much closer to my house.

Not sure, I have only ever been to the place when I have collected an item that was undelivered. On The Royal Mail website though there are two different vacancies in my area. Christmas Casual - Oldham Delivery Office and Christmas Casual - Manchester Mail Centre. I have been accepted in the Manchester one, whereas my mate has been accepted in the Oldham one. The descriptions are different for each role.

Delivery post people represent Royal Mail and are an established part of the community. You will enjoy working outdoors and meeting people and have a professional and positive attitude.

As a Delivery post person, you may start the day sorting your mail, or collect pre-sorted mail to be delivered. The average delivery walk lasts around 3 ½ hours and each day you will have to deliver multiple bags. You will work in all weathers, delivering the mail either on foot, by cycle or in a shared van.

These are important tasks in ensuring all those Christmas cards and presents get delivered to the right address!

Christmas Casual Manchester Mail Centre

The Christmas period is naturally a very busy time of year for Royal Mail.
To help us handle the increased volumes of mail we require casual workers to sort mail in our mail centres, and some to deliver the mail to addresses throughout the UK.

These are important tasks in ensuring all those Christmas cards and presents get delivered to the right address!

In the mail processing centres, the role involves:

Sorting items by hand into compartments on a sorting frame
Bagging and labelling mail for its destination
Moving mail around between conveyor belts, loading docks and trolleys
Moving mailbags from cages, sorting mailbags and bundles of mail into cages
Loading and unloading wheeled containers from vehicles to the dispatch areas

The shift patterns are the same and are available at 06:00 - 14:00 - 14:00 - 22:00 and 22:00 - 06:00 so I'm just confused to what he will actually be doing. I did not apply for that Delivery Office because I expected it to be walking around in unknown areas delivering large amounts of post. The way he was talking when he got accepted though made it sound like he wouldn't be delivering mail. Working there would cut 45 minutes off my travel time as it only takes about 10 minutes.
