It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Do you mean work for Royal Mail on a self employed basis or just combine Christmas work and be self employed doing something else at the same time? If the latter I don't think it makes any difference to Angard/ Royal Mail what the do the rest of the time. I have self -employed work that I do as well as a few shifts each week at a sorting office. No-one has ever asked me if I have another job and like you I've less busy with my other work during winter. How your tax is calculated could be a problem. I didn't fill in the P60 so I suppose I pay emergency tax at a higher rate, but the way i see it is that it means I won't have to find as much money out of my self -employed income to pay tax next year.
