Staff at Edinburgh mail centre set up a training area so new starters can learn the job away from the operational floor.

The training area opened last month in time to train more than 400 Christmas seasonal workers.

Workplace coach Regine Ngakev Djuiessie, pictured, says: ‘It’s safe and quiet, so people can concentrate on the training, and they’re not disrupting the day-to-day operation either.

‘We visited Glasgow, which is ahead of us on the World Class Mail journey, and they had a similar area.

‘We adopted it ourselves, tailoring it to our location as the layout is different here. I think it’s the best WCM initiative Edinburgh has done so far.’

The area has a sorting frame and sample letters so staff can learn how to sort mail correctly.

There’s a York and trays, and a bag with sample mail to show people how to make sure bags don’t exceed 11 kilos, and how to use them safely.

It was mentioned that a Training Area was set up at SO MC so I'm wondering if RM are going to set one up at every MC (taking up even more floor space when there isn't really enough as it is).

This does seem odd, sorting mail isnt too tricky, and on my first day (and im sure this is true of most casuals last Christmas) we had all sorted some real mail, the only mail off limits at that point being recorded delivery.

That said I was told by someone who worked at Amazon, they have a training section & videos permanently set up in their warehouses.

I had the "training" and it was completely useless. about 60 of us crowded around a tiny sorting frame with two people talking to us in RM slang that nobody could comprehend. All the learning was done on the job.

Says a lot that even the Angardies are taking the piss out of it.

OMG WTF No I haven't lost my sense of humour. Mark sums it up with the picture. The best way to learn, is to get on with the real job, with knowledgeable people around to answer any questions. I've always found that @ RM, one person (usually a manager) says "do it like this" but only gives half the story, then another one says "do it like that" etc etc. Then certain things are done one way, then in the run up to Christmas, we do it this way, then after Christmas, we go back to the first way & of course at the weekend, we do it this way.....! Even basic sorting frames, were different, letters one layout & flats a different one. But I am paid to do, not think, as I was once told in a job!

this is true, different people would tell you to do different things on the frames, you end up doing what works for you, but the training frames wont solve this problem, this is down to the people doing the training.

the first afternoon I did frames, was a bit chaotic, different people telling you different things. This is of course what training stations aim to avoid.
