CARLISLE ROYAL MAIL WORKERS WALK OUT IN ROW OVER MISSING PAY

Royal Mail workers walked out of the Carlisle sorting office at the weekend in a row over missing pay.

The Junction Street temporary workers were apparently warned on Friday that their wages had not been put into their bank accounts.

It was promised that post office giro cheques would be issued the next day but, on Saturday morning, there was no sign of the alternative payment.

About half of the shift walked out in anger, the News & Star was told.

One worker said: “We will be owed two weeks wages come Friday and there is little hope of seeing any cash.”

The temporary staff are employed by Royal Mail in-house recruitment agency Angard Staffing Solutions.

Royal Mail blamed ‘difficulties’ with the payroll system for the untimely wages blunder.

It is not known how many workers have been affected but there were reports of walkouts in other parts of the country including south London and Bristol.

Stuart Taylor, a spokesman for Royal Mail, said: “We apologise for this as our temporary Christmas staff are very important to us.”
