Vacancies for part-time Christmas jobs at the Royal Mail are four times oversubscribed, raising concerns over the state of a job market that saw unemployment rise past 2.5m last month.
More than 80,000 responses have been received for 18,000 seasonal positions at Royal Mail sorting offices – up from 70,000 applicants last year. The company has been deluged with CVs since advertising for stop-gap workers to support the 130,000 postmen and women delivering the 2bn packages, cards and letters that clog mailbags in the run-up to Christmas.

Do the selection process thoroughly and the Christmas casuals should be four times the quality we usually get.

Hardly a shock since we are at the start of the biggest global economic meltdown since 1929.Spanish unemployment touches 26% ;for 18-25 year olds it hits 49%. JesusTrueBlueTerrier wrote:http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... 18&t=39949

Re: Royal Mail inundated with Christmas job applications
No wonder I get 'no slots available' everytime I try to book my interview. I've done Christmas Casual work the last two years and, whilst I'm not trying to blow my own trumpet,I did a couple of years in a postroom before being made redundant and I've been all over the country following my football team,I like to think I have a fairly decent geographical knowledge of the UK but what's the betting I miss out whilst the muppets like the girl who asked me a couple of years ago if she should put cards for Malaysia and Colombia in the "Europe" slot are the ones who get in.

Just goes to show what a sorry state of affairs this country is in!
Just out of interest what are these people doing for the rest of the year?
I take it Christmas is just an opportunity to work another few weeks as a Casual? Pity we're such a Shite company!
