Effects of the Strike on Angard shifts

Post by Lockardian »

As many of us already know, Royal Mail staff are out on strike Friday 26th August, Wednesday 31st August, Thursday 8th September and Friday 9th September.

As far as I know, Angard staff are not being asked to work on the days of the strike, which in my opinion is a good thing.

However, as a result of the strikes there is bound to be a period of “catch up” when work not done on strike days is processed.

We were fully expecting to be asked to work this coming weekend to help with the backlog of work, but so far all I have personally been offered is a four hour shift on Sunday.

What’s happening at other mail centres? Are there shifts galore this weekend or not?

A colleague was booked a similar 4-hour shift on Sunday, 08:00 to 12:00.

I think they are waiting to see what is in the backlog plus Saturday’s load.

My MC was desperate to clear T24 and 1c yesterday evening.

Trying to make sufficient space in case there’s a glut.

Plus, blatantly obvious that the Managers are on £1,000 bonuses. LOL.

It’s not been too busy at our MC from what I can gather. We have a skeleton staff in on Monday night (similar to a Sunday night) to clear the Tracked and packets left over from Sunday dayshift and process the Amazon etc that lands. However. it could turn into a busy one if there’s still a backlog that turns up!

No extra shifts being pre-booked at my MC so far but did get a flurry of emails yesterday evening for last minute shifts. It might pick up for shifts once the the backlog starts to build up as the strikes continue.

Also got an email yesterday offering a shift for today and I've had managers on the phone today asking if I want to come in. When I asked how many were in only got the vague answer of a few were in already. I think they are a bit surprised that people are telling them they won't work strike days. It will be interesting to find out how many have actually worked today.

I was offered three 8 hour early shifts at Mount Pleasant Mail centre last week, but I declined them as I can only work lates - my joined up work calendar shows my availability as lates only - then angard send out emails offering late shifts !!

My mate at Medway mail centre got 3 shifts last week.

Despite marking myself unavailable on JoinedUp for both Thursday and Friday, I was twice allocated a nightshift for Thursday and had to decline both requests!

Now I hear tomorrow’s strike is called off and have marked myself available - will probably hear nothing!

From what I can gather, RM staff can still choose not to attend on Friday and this will be classed as authorised unpaid leave, so I expect many will take that option. Friday nightshift will be interesting for anyone who does attend!

Other than a couple of the shifts being increased from 4 to 8 hours last week strikes having no effect so far. Didn't get any shifts this week, a couple of emails but not booked. Once Friday's strike was cancelled my pre-booked shift for next Monday was cancelled.

I’ve been booked in for tonight and Sunday night, which is quite unusual. Expected one or both to be cancelled but so far so good.

I chose not to work last night (Friday) but a colleague who did said it wasn’t particularly busy.

The cancelling of the strikes seems to have created shift opportunities at Mount Pleasant mc.!
I worked Saturday and Sunday, 8 hour shifts both days , mainly trying to sort the several thousand ejects from the new parcel sorting machine, plus thousands of returns from overseas, probably about 30 casuals there on the Sunday shift.
