Iam surprised our forum members dont really have more to say about this. You think your jobs are under pressure right now what about when they slowly ramp up this agency where they can get workers for around 60% of your basic hourly rate? Plus all the pension contributions and holiday entitlement etc will all probably be the minimum they can get away with by law! This agency dicovery is massive in a company where most of its exdenditure is staff costs.

Couldn't agree more. There will be a core workforce and the rest made up as and when with agency staff.

We'll be one half of the '2 man, 1 van' system and they'll be the other.

This isn't really anything new, Royal Mail used to employ "casuals" directly without the need for an agency. It's how I started eighteen years ago and probably the way that many who are full-time now started with Royal Mail in the late eighties/early nineties.

They still have plenty of casuals iam one of them. But the point is i get paid the wages that are agreed by the union not minimum wage!

You're not a casual you have a contract. The use of short term staff whether a casual or agency staff only becomes a problem when you do it on a long term basis.

Starting in North Wales now - 16 casuals taken on in Rhyl DO - had ideas when I joined that Royal Mail was different to everyone else but was wrong it appears.

Casualisation will result in a race to the bottom in wages and hard earned wage levels will become threatened. Fight or flight?

The difference now is the pay - £5.95 is a complete busting of hard won negotiated rates of pay, and this new ground will be almost certainly used for strike busting, replacement of existing staff overtime and at its worst replacement of full time positions by the back door. I don't begrudge people work, but from a personal point of view, on a p/t contract I rely on overtime (at £8.00 plus p/h) to actually get a living wage out of the job. If so called casuals fill in these hours at £6 per hour (attractive to management who don't give one about the morality of paying people two vastly different rates of pay for the same job) then I will be seriously out of pocket and struggling to pay bills, possibly worse off than the agency crowd. Particularly disgusting that this appears to be an arm of RM, set up specifically for driving down costs and increasing uncertainty among the existing work force. Was this part of the 2010 agreement?

Yes keep us informed, sure it will be hardly a barrel of laughs for you either. You should be being employed on the rates of pay we all get on RM's books i.e. £8 p/hr upwards. Otherwise I fear a race to the bottom in terms and conditions and an owned slave workforce (agency) while senior management will remain immune from it as in so many other workplaces.

Yes it is hard work! and at minimum wage it makes it harder, I got my contract emailed to me which makes laughable reading !!
looks like it was thrown together in a hurry with many mistakes in it... basicly it is a 12 week contract with no garantee of any work and can be dismissed at any time!! I feel like I am scabbing and am not happy about it although this is the only work I can get

I've always said,better to get a PT job in a supermarket than with RM,the hourly rate is lower but you aint killing yourself for an extra £ or 2 an hr,especially if it's only worth 20 or 30 quid extra a week with the size of the contracts given out nowadays.
