What the Indian Post is doing to boost employee morale

The life of a public servant in a city like Mumbai is not easy. Overpaid and underappreciated, the khaki-clad figures carry on with their work, come rain or shine. The friendly neighbourhood postman is one such individual, who despite the hardships, ensures that you are served diligently. And while postmen look forward to being rewarded every Diwali, here’s some (official) good news for them. The postal department has launched an initiative, wherein the postmen who demonstrate exemplary performance and behaviour will be awarded as the ‘Performer of the Month’.


A pat on the back

Considering that the postal department still follows age-old practices and systems to a large extent, the move to recognise the efforts of postal employees is not only welcoming but also contemporary. This initiative launched in the month of February this year, is currently active in the postal offices located between Jogeshwari and Dahisar. Postmaster Prabhunarayan Bharadwaj, who works at the delivery post office of Jakaria Road, Malad (West), shares, “We had been thinking of ways to increase the morale and boost the productivity of our postmen. Our men should be appreciated because apart from their regular work, they also take on additional duties such as informing the public about schemes like the Atal Pension Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana.”

Local hero

The criteria for the award include a point-based system wherein attendance accounts for 30 points; behaviour towards staff and public accounts for 10 points; performance regarding speed post delivery accounts for 30 points, while registered post delivery and ordinary delivery account for 20 and 10 points respectively. Postman Ajit A. Sawant of Jakaria Road post office, who is the proud recipient of the award for the month of February, shares, “I have been working here for the past 30 years and completing my duties without any expectation. But this award makes me happy. I’d like to thank my seniors for giving me this award.” Sawant has another four years left before he can officially throw in his khaki satchel.
