PostNL testing mobile package boxes for always-home delivery

PostNL is experimenting with mobile package boxes to make receiving packages at home even easier for customers. With this “Always-home boxes” customers no longer need to physically be at home to receive a package.

The advent of online shopping means that the demand for package delivery in the Netherlands is ever increasing. This has resulted in package deliverers needing to find new and innovative ways to deliver packages in person, even if the customer is not at home. PostNL, for example, has already place so-called package vending machines at major train stations, extended its delivery hours into the evenings and also delivers packages on Sundays and Mondays.

This “always home box” is their latest initiative. The box is anchored to the wall of a house and can be accessed with a code sent to the customers cell phone. Once the box is opened, PostNL receives a notification that the package has been delivered and will come to pick up the box. Customers can also use the box to return packages.

According to PostNL, the box is waterproof and resistant to cutting and UV light, so the package will be safe until the customer opens the box with their cellphone.

PostNL employees are currently testing the box themselves, according to the Volkskrant. The have found that the technique works, but there are some problems, such as the deliveryman not knowing how many boxes he will need and advance. The postal service also told the newspaper that the costs involved have not yet been completely mapped.
