Continuing disruption to PostNL services

PostNL has advised its customers that some disruptions to its package delivery services are continuing, as a result of strike action by some of its independent parcel deliverers.

As previously reported, the Dutch postal workers’ union FNV had voiced concerns over the employment status of PostNL’s 1,000+ freelancers. In order to address those concerns, on Monday (13 July) PostNL invited all its independent parcel deliverers to become company employees. Alternatively, if they choose to remain as “entrepreneurs”, the company said that their “remuneration will be increased by about 10%”.

This offer seemed to address the union’s main concerns, but some of the independent parcel deliverers are not satisfied with the deal and have been striking. In a notice published on its website, PostNL said that about 85% of packages are being delivered as normal, but there are “delays of one or more days” on about 15%. The company said that it expected to clear a large part of the backlog over the weekend and added that is maintaining a dialogue with the protesters and will keep customers informed of future developments
