Campaign steps up in UPS Parcels ‘impossible workloads’ dispute

The ten month campaign to highlight the ‘impossible workloads’ faced by employees of UPS Parcels steps up a gear this week with an intensive leafleting campaign at London depots.

The demonstrations will be at Camden, the biggest UPS depot in Europe; the North Feltham trading estate; and at Croydon – and then widened out to other UPS depots across the country.

This action will form the bedrock for a national strike ballot of the UK’s UPS Parcels workforce.

Unite, the country’s largest union, has been holding talks with the management under the auspices of the conciliation service, Acas since December to resolve the workload and bullying issues faced by its 150 members at Camden, but to no avail.

Unite national officer for road transport and logistics, Matt Draper said: “This week we begin very public activity to shine a light on UPS Parcels. Our members at Camden have faced impossible and unreasonable workloads, which have been accompanied by a bullying culture by management.

“However, feedback from our members at other depots across the country points to similar problems, hence the preparation that Unite is now making for a national ballot for strike action.

“We will be leafleting outside the London depots with a dual purpose – to give our members the confidence to stand up to the company and at the same time to shine a light on UPS by letting passing members of the public know exactly what kind of company this is.

“This is a company that forces workers to work beyond normal finishing times. Some drivers are regularly forced to work several hours beyond the 5.00pm finish time - or face disciplinary action.

“We have also seen the management disregard the agreements on sick pay, and an even more sinister change by refusing to pay workers injured at work. UPS is day-by-day resembling the mill owners of Victorian times rather than the employer of choice it claims to be.

“The management has not moved an inch since our members went on strike on 22 November 2013 over excessive workloads.”

The leafleting demos will run from 07.00 to 11.00 at the following three depots:

Thursday 31 July - Camden UPS, 353 Regis Road, London NW5 3UP

Monday 4 August - West London UPS, Central Way, North Feltham Trading Estate, Middlesex TW14 OUU

Monday 11 August - Croydon UPS, Unit C, Prologis Park, Greenland Way
Croydon, CRO 4TD

Unite has repeatedly warned that UPS could lose out to its competitors, the Royal Mail and DHL, if the underlying issues at UPS are not addressed.
