Parcel delivery company DPD to create 1,500 jobs at sorting depots

Parcel delivery company DPD will create up to 1,500 jobs as it expands to cope with an explosion in online orders.

The announcement comes just a week after Royal Mail unveiled plans to invest £75million in its Parcelforce business with the creation of 1,000 posts over the next four years.
As part of a £175million overall investment European company, DPD plans to spend £100million in building a sorting hub in the midlands and £20million on refurbishing two existing depots.

The company is considering five sites for development around Leicester and Rugby and hopes to have the depot built within the next two years.

DPD confirmed the growth in online shopping was behind much of its success and said it had won more than £70million in new business since it launched its Predict time-slot service in March 2010.

‘This investment will allow us to expand our network capacity further to meet the demands from our customers and maintain our very high service standards,’ said DPD chief executive Dwain McDonald.

Royal Mail, which is in direct competition with DPD, is looking for growth both at home and abroad ahead of a possible flotation in 2014.

Parcelforce delivered 66million packages last year on behalf of customers which include Amazon.

It is building depots and processing centres to cope with the growth in online sales, which are expected to account for a quarter of all retail spending by 2016.

Parcels remain an important part of the Royal Mail business, accounting for nearly half of the group’s £9.5billion turnover last year.
