Swiss Post holds onto monopoly

The Swiss Post will be able to hold onto its last remaining monopoly.

It’s the final bulwark of the Swiss Post: Only they can deliver letters weighing less than 50 grams.

The left and MPs from rural areas joined forces in the National Council to form a majority against efforts to remove that right.

Their argument was that the monopoly funded the the quality of the service and kept people in rural and mountain areas connected.

The vote went against the Council of State’s decision to support the Federal Council in its bid to remove the monopoly.

However parliamentarians didn’t go so far as to approve a proposal to allow PostFinance to operate fully as a normal bank— that’s something that could go to a public vote in a few years.
