Australians may be able to send Christmas cards for free this year, with postal workers set to take industrial action including a ban on checking mail is stamped.
About 18,000 postal workers have until 10am (AEDT) on Friday to vote on taking industrial action, calling on Australia Post to protect full-time jobs and penalty shifts, the Communications Electrical Plumbing Union (CEPU) says.
The ban on checking letters and cards are stamped would be part of the action, which the CEPU says could affect 70 million Christmas cards, with revenues of $35 million.
CEPU national president Ed Husic said union members wanted to limit public inconvenience over Christmas but needed to send a strong message.
"Taking this ballot - along with possible industrial action - is the only way we can send a message to management," Mr Husic said in a statement on Monday.
"Our members want a better enterprise agreement to protect their jobs, safety and pay."
Australia Post says it's been negotiating in good faith on an agreement which delivers job security and wage increases.
It says it has committed to wage increases totalling 12 per cent since 2007 and a four per cent pay rise is guaranteed in 2010.
"Given the current economic climate it is concerning the union would contemplate industrial action," Australia Post said in a statement.
"With this in mind we will be urging our staff to vote no against Christmas strikes in the ballot."
"Should any strike action occur, Australia Post will have in place contingencies to ensure any disruption is minimal during a very important time for businesses and the public."

If billy and co are running it, there won't be a strike, and they will be shafted like we have been!!!! perhaps we should all move to columbia?????
