A Senate inquiry will examine claims Australia Post is sending injured employees back to work too quickly.

It will also investigate union claims that managers at the government-owned postal monopoly are being rewarded for the practice.

The Communications, Electrical and Plumbing Union says doctors employed by Australia Post are jeopardising the wellbeing of employees.

"We've got the evidence to demonstrate that what Australia Post is doing is sending people back to work well before they're supposed to," the union's national secretary Ed Husic told reporters in Canberra on Thursday.

One motorbike postie in Tasmania had cut his left hand on the job, and was ordered to return to work, using only his right hand.

Family First senator Steve Fielding said it was "outrageous" that Australia Post management was rewarded for forcing people back to work.

"Any company should make sure that workers do come back to work as soon as they can, but not in a reckless way and not in an unfair way," he said.

"The Senate inquiry will get to the bottom of it."

Australia Post was ignoring the health and safety of its employees, Senator Fielding said.

"I can't say this strongly enough, we need to make sure that Australia Post does the right thing by its workers.

"I think there is some reckless practices going on with Australia Post and how they treat their workers and it's not on."
