STUDENTS at Barnsley College have taken on a real-world sustainability challenge set by delivery company Evri.
As part of Evri’s commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2035, the company tasked Level 2 Administration, Legal, Finance and Accounting T Level Foundation students with exploring how it could improve the collection of data related to employee commuting. The aim was to use this data to identify opportunities to reduce emissions.
Working to a realistic £50,000 budget, students were asked to put forward creative, yet practical solutions that could be implemented by the company.
The final ideas were pitched in a Dragons' Den-style presentation to a panel of experts, including Lucie Rowley, Senior Sustainability Manager at Evri; Sasha Beswick, Head of Sustainability at the college; and business tutor, Tina Jacques.
Lucie Rowley, Senior Sustainability Manager at Evri, said: “The project is important for Evri as we have a variety of employees across the UK, so collecting their commuting data and reporting on that more accurately is going to make a real difference to our current carbon emissions and how we are reporting that. So, this project has the capability to make real-life impact on our carbon emissions.”
Business tutor Tina Jacques, added: “Collaborating with Evri has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Their commitment to sustainability and openness to student insight gave our students the chance to tackle a genuine business challenge. It was inspiring to see our students grow in confidence as they applied their knowledge to meaningful work. Projects like this show them that their ideas can help shape a more sustainable future.”
The winning concept will be announced when the students return to College in September and has the potential to be developed into a full business case and used to enhance Evri’s internal carbon reporting processes, providing students with the unique opportunity to contribute to real, tangible change within the business.
