Hundreds of fresh food recipe boxes have been sent to the tip as a delivery company near Gloucester has been overwhelmed by a 'record-number' of parcels for distribution. A member of the public who visited the depot to collect a parcel, could not believe his eyes when he saw a rubbish truck at the ready to take away such a vast amount of food.
Around 200 HelloFresh boxes were seen at the Yodel depot in Quedgeley being prepared to be for disposed of. When the member of the public realised how much was being binned, they said they were in 'disbelief' with how much food was headed to the tip.
The HelloFresh boxes were lined up under cover outside the Yodel depot ready for the bin before lunchtime on December 3. The person collecting their package initially thought the boxes were getting ready to be shipped out for delivery however when they saw the rubbish lorry pull up they went and ask a member of staff at the depot what was happening.
In an anonymous email sent to Gloucestershire Live the member of the public wrote: "Today (December 3) I visited the Yodel depot in Quedgeley in Gloucester to pick up a parcel that I had been waiting for. Once back in my car I noticed a large amount of HelloFresh boxes which I naturally thought were for customers to be delivered.
"Then I discovered that they were being chucked in the bin! there was a large bin lorry parked up. I walked over to ask what’s happening and asked if there was food in all these boxes and a staff member replied and said yes it is.
"I walked away in disbelief and over hear the bin collection staff member ask how many boxes they were to get rid of and the staff member replied 400. I thought it was absolutely disgusting that they were chucking good quality food away for what it seems to be no reason at all.
"With the cash flow crisis at the moment and this time of year I don’t understand why a big company like this does not donate the food to food banks or families in need."
In a statement from Yodel, they have said they have had record-breaking volumes of packages to deliver.
A Yodel spokesperson stated: “Due to record-breaking volumes, we regrettably were unable to deliver a very small percentage of our planned HelloFresh boxes. We make every effort to reschedule deliveries for the next day or redistribute food boxes that are undelivered. When it comes to fresh food, health and safety is of utmost importance and we are working closely with HelloFresh to ensure all safety requirements are consistently met, and to resolve matters with customers. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
HelloFresh have said strict food safety regulations mean sometimes food boxes can not be redistributed. The company has said they are 'picking this up with Yodel to try to ensure a situation like this does not happen again'.
A HelloFresh spokeswoman said: "Unfortunately Yodel were unable to deliver around 200 recipe boxes this week. At HelloFresh, the safety and quality of our food is our highest priority. Since our recipe boxes contain fresh ingredients, we need to follow strict food safety regulations and sometimes cannot safely redistribute our boxes. All customers that didn’t receive their box as a result of this issue have been contacted and refunded in full.
"As a company we are committed to minimising food waste in our supply chain and work closely with charities like the Felix Project. We have donated over 10 million meals to help fight food insecurity.
"We are picking this up with Yodel to try to ensure a situation like this does not happen again."
