Last mile tram for parcel deliveries

Amazon and its partners are launching a pilot project in Germany called the “Gütertram”. The tram will be used exclusively for delivering parcels in Frankfurt.

Before the parcels are loaded on to the Gütertram, they are taken by electric vans from Amazon’s delivery station to the first tram stop on the outskirts of the city. Then the electrically powered tram transports them to the city centre, from where they are delivered by electric cargo bikes to the customers.

The solution will create a zero-tailpipe emission journey. The pilot will be carried out in partnership with the Frankfurt University, the Verkehrsgesellschaft Frankfurt am Main (VGF) and Intermodal City Injections (part of Amazon). (ben)

We’ll never know the real cost of this so no direct comparison will be able to be made between it and delivery vans.
