Amazon hands 10% pay rise to frontline operations staff

Amazon has introduced an almost 10% pay rise for tens of thousands of its UK workers, effective from 29 September.

The online giant has upped its minimum starting pay for frontline operations staff to between £13.50 and £14.50 per hour, depending on their location.

For workers with 36 months service, this increase will be to between £13.75 and £14.75 an hour.

The rise equates to annual starting salary of between £28,080 and £30,160.

Amazon UK country manager John Boumphrey said: “Our frontline employees across the UK operations network are a huge part of the success of our business and we appreciate everything they do to deliver for our customers.

“That’s why we’re proud to announce that we’re increasing our minimum starting pay for all frontline employees to the equivalent of more than £28,000 a year, and we continue to offer industry-leading benefits from day one, as well as outstanding opportunities for our employees to start and grow a great career.”

The pay increase comes after Amazon has been involved in a battle with GMB over union recognition.

In July, the trade union lost its vote for union recognition at Amazon’s Coventry warehouse, following efforts for staff to be given the right to collectively bargain on pay and working conditions.

If workers voted for recognition, GMB would have been given the right to represent workers in negotiations over pay, hours and holidays with the online giant.
