Australia Post confirm Net Zero delivery date of 2050

National postal service Australia Post has today announced its formal commitments to the Australian government’s Net Zero by 2050 climate goals, becoming the first Commonwealth Government Business Enterprise to sign on to the target.


Launching its 2025 Sustainability Roadmap today, Australia Post have announced their plans to commit to a raft of ambitious environmental initiatives, including a 2025 reduced emissions target validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. The 2025 targets, particularly, see Australia Post committing to reducing its emissions a total of 15 percent by 2025 when compared to its FY19 emissions baseline.

The postal service’s 2025 ambitions will further encompass the adoption of a 100 percent fully sustainable packaging range and goals of decreasing waste to landfill by as much as 20 percent when compared to FY19, further committing to a $100 million spend with social enterprise and Indigenous suppliers by 2025.

Already overseeing Australia’s single largest fleet of electric delivery vehicles, Australia Post’s roadmap flags further investments in renewables and its existing electric fleet, presumably as it hopes to join the Federal Labor government in further encouraging a more widespread adoption of electric transport options throughout the country.

“I am incredibly proud of our sustainability credentials. Over the past few years, we have seen unprecedented growth in our parcels business because of the pandemic. Although, as our revenue has climbed, our carbon intensity has dropped. In fact, the carbon emissions per parcel associated with sending the average domestic parcel via Parcel Post halved between FY18 and FY21,” Australia Post Group CEO and Managing Director Paul Graham said in a statement, “That’s a great start but we still have a long way to go, and I am delighted to announce Australia Post will target Net Zero by 2050 as part of our 2025 Sustainability Roadmap launched today. This plan will guide Australia Post in the next phase of our sustainability journey as it becomes even more critical to accelerate our decarbonisation.”
