Peter Mandelson's flailing over Royal Mail

Peter Mandelson may prove to be more flexible than he appears about the future of Royal Mail.

I'm assured the Business Secretary is genuinely prepared to consider alternatives to partial privatisation.

That's probably wise considering that the Dutch suitor TNT is getting cold feet and that an all-party report yesterday demolished the case for selling at all.

Lord Mandelson's position is that he's totally fixed on the ends - modernising Royal Mail - but not entirely set on the means.

One idea being kicked around in Westminster is to turn Royal Mail into a BBCstyle trust.

Public owners would be guaranteed for a few years, after which the new body would chart its own way.

The plan might get over the political hurdle of next year's election, if backed by the posties' union.

Anyone with a good idea should send it, on a postcard, to Lord Mandelson.

He's in a hole and needs to be dug out..
