'THE dinner party guest from hell,' was how one political sketch writer described Morecambe's MP, Geraldine Smith, in a recent article.

Ann Treneman of The Times painted a colourful picture of Geraldine in her Parliamentary sketch, making the back-bencher out to be something of a thorn in Prime Minister Gordon Brown's side.

However, Geraldine said she held Mr Brown in high regard and that she was only 'doing her job' and holding the Government to account over proposed changes to the Royal Mail.

Ms Treneman wrote: "Ger-aldine Smith was called to speak and you could see the hairs on the back of Mr Brown's neck quiver. For Mr Brown, Geraldine, with her old Labour agenda and relentless campaigning, is the dinner party guest from hell."

"'The case for the partial sale of Royal Mail is crumbling,' announced Geraldine in her thick Lancastrian accent, 'and opposition is growing across the country and in this House.' There was a rumble, like thunder in the chamber.

"Mr Brown flashed one of his weird inappropriate smiles, the first sign of weakness. 'I know that you have never been a supporter,' he said, although there was no passion in his defence."

Geraldine told The Visitor: "You can either be a sycophantic MP and ask all the right questions, or you can be one who speaks her mind and does what is right.

"My first responsibility is to my constituents and not to get invited to dinner by the PM.

"Peter Mandelson is pushing the postal service changes through, but he cancelled our last meeting.

"I think they should drop the proposed privatisation and go ahead with the other reforms."

I'd quite like to meet the "Dinner Guest from Hell", she sounds like someone with a bit of honour, and respect for us, the people she serves. Makes a change really when you think about it. :Applause :Applause :Applause
