Safeguarding Customers’ Mail (Mail Integrity)

Post by TrueBlueTerrier »

No. 105/2010
Ref. L5.05
Date: 5th February 2010

TO: ALL BRANCHES WITH POSTAL MEMBERS & POSTAL DIVISIONAL REPS
For immediate circulation to all appropriate Area/Unit Representatives

Dear Colleague

Safeguarding Customers’ Mail (Mail Integrity)

Branches/Representatives will recall that the Union circulated LTB 541/06 (copy attached) in August 2006 which detailed the position agreed with the business on the process and detail of the approach to be applied in respect of Mail Integrity.

It has been brought to our attention that Local Briefings on Mail Integrity have been taking place and letters are being distributed to members (copy attached) which they are being asked to sign to acknowledge that they have received and understood the content. We have subsequently received a copy of this document and have identified that its content does not reflect the wording of the original letter previously agreed with the business.

The CWU continues to support the principle of Safeguarding Customers’ Mail and the overall commitment to Mail Integrity however it will not accept the business acting in isolation on this issue. This matter has been raised at a Senior Level in Royal Mail and the Union are awaiting a response to the representations that have been made.

In view of the above, Branches/Representatives are advised that if any of our members are asked to sign a letter that is not identical to the one contained in LTB 541/06, then Local representation should be made immediately to Managers on the basis that the letter is unagreed and that our members are being advised by CWU Headquarters that they should not sign any document relating to this issue until such time as this matter has been clarified at National Level.

All enquiries regarding the content of this LTB should be addressed as appropriate to Phil Browne, Acting Assistant Secretary Indoor Department quoting reference number L5.05, Bob Gibson, Assistant Secretary Outdoor Department quoting reference number 590 or Terry Pullinger, Assistant Secretary Parcels, Network & Quadrant quoting reference number 209.

Yours sincerely
