It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

How do posties in the far North cope with bad weather. They must have some good tips, what with being used to these sort of conditions all the time?

SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS – PAY & MODERNISATION AGREEMENT
Dear Colleague
SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS – PAY & MODERNISATION AGREEMENT
CWU HQ are receiving numerous reports and enquiries that as a result of the severe weather conditions, Royal Mail Managers are attempting to insist that in cases where our members are being sent home early from work due to unsafe conditions for delivery, collections, road services etc, the Pay & Modernisation Agreement and in particular the flexibility clause within that agreement, is applicable.
There is no provision within the Pay & Modernisation Agreement for the clawback of any time as a result of what is tantamount to an 'act of God' i.e. the severe weather conditions that the UK is currently experiencing.
We have had further reports that some Managers are attempting to have our members take annual leave, make good the time, or even in some cases Special Leave 'C' (unpaid) where they could not attend work through no fault of their own. Once again, our representatives should be clear that this has not been agreed with the Postal Department at CWU HQ.
Any enquiries should be addressed to the DGS (P) Department quoting reference number 60000.
Yours sincerely
Dave Ward
Deputy General Secretary (P)
Dear Colleague,
RE: Severe Weather Conditions – Pay & Modernisation Agreement
Since the publication of LtB 95/2009, the Postal Department has received a number of enquiries.
It appears that in some areas management are attempting to introduce unagreed adjustments to hours or forcing individuals to take unpaid or annual leave when they were unable to attend work due to the weather conditions. Some managers are claiming to justify this approach by quoting from a document entitled “Severe Weather Operating Manual for use in Royal Mail”. This is an unagreed management document. Furthermore there is no provision within the Pay and Modernisation Agreement for clawback of hours as a result of what is tantamount to an ‘act of God’.
Each individual case should be looked at according to its merits and the local weather conditions. Any problems should be taken through the Industrial Relations Framework. During this time the status quo should remain.
Any enquiries regarding this LtB please contact the DGS (P) Department quoting reference number 60000.
Yours sincerely
Dave Ward
Deputy General Secretary (P)

As a new 20 hour contract postman of three months ongoing gainful employment(and how do you live on £140 a week?), I am perfectly entitled then to put down an hour overtime for adverse conditions? I only ask because I am also one of these new abandoned postman who gets his post prepped at the office but get it delivered to my home to keep my hours down, and therefore don't see that many guys to get advice?

I'd book the O/T or ring you Line Manager and as for HIS advice on what you need to do regarding the completion of your delivery if you feel you can't finish it!

Re: Severe Weather Operating Manual for use within RML
By D2D's presume you mean 'junk'? They are put into the frame by a third party at the office and prepped in with the mail. Then most days it is dropped off at my home at anytime between 8.30am - 10.30am. I like the job but am patiently waiting for better hours, which you only get with an earlier start from an office on domestic deliveries - that is obvious. I average about 23-24 hrs a week with afternoon collections and some odd extra hours here and there.
I have worked in various industries over the years and must admit my impression of RM is very familiar, managers employed to do an impossible (and inflammatory) task of screwing costs down ever further while supposedly trying to maintain some sort of service. That is the logic (or illogic?) of the free market, hadn't realised how much it was affecting a national institution until I joined.
I want to do the whole job i.e. prep my own round and deliver it plus whatever. Whoever put through ideas of 20 hrs people just delivering must never have had to deliver after A.N.Other of varying standards has 'prepped' your round/walk, i.e. 0 (if good) to 30+ (if bad) letters completely in the wrong place or No 46 then 48 then three 46 and then 48 of the same road in that order so you go here and there like a deranged individual looking very unprofessional. Most of our vans look a state and are not RM, if my mail is later I have to chop across the round to get Sp Del to a house before 1pm. I could go on but I won't bore you with stuff you know already. I am happy to deliver parcels but some of the sizes I get are a bit ridiculous for the mode of transport I use. Management seem blissfully unaware of the increasing parcel traffic we have to deal with on the walks, we don't seem geared up for it. Just my impressions.

Welcome to the future people! What this unfortunate person is enduring is the template for Royal Mails' vison for the future. I feel really sorry for them, but if we don't ensure we get a good deal from these never-ending "discussions" then this is exactly what we can ALL look forward to.redneck wrote:By D2D's presume you mean 'junk'?
