Suspect Packages Delivered to Labour MPs at Westminster Offices:

Dear Colleagues,

Further to LTB 152/18 issued on 14 March, this is to inform you that a fourth suspect, malicious package arrived in Westminster addressed to a Labour MP last Thursday evening, 15th March, again sent from the Sheffield area. As a result of that, and discussions with Royal Mail Security, the attached Royal Mail Security Alert has been issued and will be briefed to all Collections and Distribution Staff in the East Region.

Since 13th March four of these suspect letters containing malicious communications and a ‘gel type substance’ have been delivered to the offices of Labour MPs of Muslim Faith at Westminster. The gel substance is reported to have caused some irritation to the eyes of persons who have come in contact, but has been classified by the Police as harmless.

The letters are described as white standard business DL envelopes bearing a first class postage stamp. The envelopes have been posted in the Sheffield area.

The particular identifying features are:

Addressed to Members of Parliament, of Muslim faith, at Westminster.
The address is printed or typed at the very top edge of the envelope and may be over written by the “Delivered by Royal Mail” impression.
If such items are seen by any member of the workforce they are asked to deal with it as a suspect item following the guidance described in “Be Aware/Stay Calm” Royal Mail Guidance and to report it to Management who will then telephone the RMG Central Postal Control and 0345 266 1060.

Royal Mail, the CWU and Unite/CMA are jointly reminding all Royal Mail staff to be vigilant in looking out for suspect items of mail and to always err on the side of caution, be careful rather than taking any risks and always follow the ‘Be Aware/Stay Calm’ Guidance and Risk Assessment Process for any suspect items of mail which may be found in the postal system.

As previously reported, a Police and forensic investigation in underway and both Royal Mail and CWU will give every assistance in efforts to track down the criminal perpetrators of these nasty crimes.
