disclaimer form?
I don't understand why there's a problem. Obviously it makes sense to wear a helmet, but if anyone chooses NOT to then why can't RM just let you sign an "indemnity" form??? All they're worried about is us making a claim if we fall off and bang our head - so an indemnity form which relieves RM of liability is the EASY answer.

It should be personal choice with RM reminding anyone who rides a bike that it would be preferable to wear one and if you don't you sign the relevant forms.. But no, they couldn't do that as (so I was told) RM decided a helmet was somehow part of the uniform and subject to the usual archaic rules about that - strangely hardly anyone is pulled for not wearing certain items of clothing etc etc.......
This is yet another reason why the cwu is not high up in my list of favourites, why was it that those that actually used bike were never consulted or asked an opinion - typical cwu.
I used to use a bike before I moved office and believe me I tried every tactic and arguement under the sun to avoid wearing it! The end result was I put it on my head without straps rode out of the office (and sometimes with dodgy lights which were NEVER mentioned by the gestapo), round the corner and took it off - thats if a manager was looking, if not it just got attached to the front and taken for a ride out.
Depends how keen your local gestapo are, size of office, how much riding you have to do and various other factors as to how much you will get away with..

What's the problem with wearing them?
Although I agree with you that it should be a personal choice. I don't understand why you wouldn't want to wear a helmet. I used to do a lot of Cycling when I was younger, and I started wearing a helmet shortly after they became available.
Have you ever seen what happens to someone who gets knocked off a Bike without a helmet?
It 'aint pretty!

Personally I'd want to count the brain cells of anyone who chose NOT to wear a helmet and be as safe as possible, anyone who chooses not to wear a helmet because it might affect his hairstyle would only be injured if he fell on his ar*e.Night Tonic wrote:Agree. Not much point in raising this issue if you hit the road (or god forbid a car) and have no brain cells left to even read the rest of the thread. RM is right to enforce it.

Seems simple enough:
Ride a bike, Wear a Helmet OR Walk
Lets face it, This is a health and Safety issue, like driving and seat belts.
Do the decent thing and wear a helmet, you'll look stupid in a wheel chair & brain damaged.
Remember, there are hundreds of imigrants queing for your job......................

A big purple helmet on your head
RM insist that the cycle helmet is part of the uniform and they'll conduct code you if you don't wear one plus if you are involved in an accident then you'll be better protected (both physically and financially).

Helmets
Me I am a H&S rep and i fully support the use of cycle helmets. I have worn a helmet for over ten years and can't see the problem with them. Most of the guy's in my office who refuse to wear them won't for vanity reasons only. I would rather a collegue looked silly and survived an accident than have them not wear one and loose them in tragic circumstances. Afeww years ago now a postie died in the arms of my wifes best friend in Poole it was not his fault someone opened a car door without looking knocked him of , he banged his head on the kirbstone, and sadly passed away .It is awfull to hear of any postie comming to harm but Iwill not support the non use of helmets by anyone , if not for you think of your family
